Side table with ceramic mosaic in shades of blue

This side table has a top with a mosaic of ceramic tiles in lively shades of blue, inspired by the ocean. Up close you see the individual tiles and joints; at a metre's distance the blue merges into something that recalls water.

Material and finish

Ceramic mosaic tiles on the top, carried by a black metal frame. The black gives a sleek contrast with the lively blue and keeps the whole calm. The frame gives the table a modern look, the mosaic brings the crafted character.

Where it stands

As an accent table in the living room, next to the sofa at seat height, where the top is in view and the pattern comes into its own. As an original bedside table in a bedroom that is otherwise kept calm. At 33 by 33 cm it takes up little space, so it also fits in a corner where a larger piece of furniture would be too much.

Combining

The blue asks for calm around it. Do not put too much on it: one object, a lamp or nothing. Next to a sofa in a neutral fabric such as linen or wool it works better than among other coloured pieces. With white, sand colour and natural wood, the blue comes forward most strongly.

Care

Wipe the top with a damp cloth. Avoid abrasives, which can dull the surface of the tiles. Joints hold a little dust; a soft brush is enough to keep them clean. Dust the metal frame dry.

Good to know

A mosaic top consists of many small tiles with joints between them. As a result the surface is not as flat as a top made in one piece. A glass or a cup stands on it stably, but for a laptop or for writing on, a side table with a smooth top is handier.
