Railway wood side table with removable glass top | Decodeman

A side table in railway wood with a removable glass top, made to slide under a sofa and come out again when you need it. The wood comes of old railway sleepers, the top is bevelled glass with a polished edge.

Material and finish

Railway wood with a glass plate on top whose edges are cut at an angle. That bevelling is the detail that lifts the piece: the edge catches light and makes a visible line around the top. The plate is removable, so you can also use the wood uncovered or clean the plate separately.

Where it goes

The table is designed to slide under a seat. Pull it out when you have visitors, slide it back when you want the space free. Just as usable as a plant table by a window, or as a bedside table in a room where an ordinary cabinet would feel too heavy.

Care

Clean the glass with an ordinary glass cleaner, but spray on the cloth and not on the plate, so nothing runs between glass and wood. Dust the wood dry. Railway wood keeps working: small cracks and colour differences belong to the material.

Why the glass is removable

A loose top seems a detail, but it changes how you use the piece. You can take the glass off to clean it separately, you can show the wood underneath when you find that prettier, and you can replace the plate if something ever happens to it without writing off the whole piece.

A polished edge is nicer to handle than a straight-cut plate, and it catches light in a way a flat edge does not.

Styling

The weathered wood and the clear glass together form a calm contrast. Next to a sofa in linen or leather that feels warm, in a sleek interior the wood brings a little character.
