Constellation aeroplane model Queen of the skies, large, metal

This large Constellation aeroplane model is made of metal and measures 70 by 75 cm. Slender and powerful in line, like the aircraft itself, which was nicknamed Connie.

Dimensions and material

• Length 70 cm
• Width 75 cm
• Height 13 cm
• Metal

Where that shape originates

The elegant appearance of the Constellation was the result of a special way of building: no two frames had the same shape. That design was replaced long ago by tubular constructions that cost less to build and withstood pressure changes better. The graceful line disappeared for economic and technical reasons, and that is exactly why it still captures the imagination.

The nickname

Connie set a series of speed and distance records, but also often suffered engine trouble. So often that the aircraft was jokingly called the most reliable three-engined aeroplane. That story belongs to the aircraft and gives the model an anecdote to tell anyone who comes to look at it.

Where it goes

At 70 by 75 cm this is not a desk piece but an object that needs a place of its own: a long console, a wide cabinet, a sideboard or a coffee table. Leave some room around it so the shape shows well, and do not put it in a walkway, where sooner or later a wing will catch a sleeve. With a height of only 13 cm the model is low, so it also fits under a shelf; it is mainly the width that decides where it can go.

Care

Dust with a soft, dry cloth or a feather duster, working out the fuselage to the wingtips. Remove fingerprints with a slightly damp cloth and rub dry. Do not use abrasive products. Lift it with two hands under the fuselage, never by a wing.
