Draught excluder with rabbit motif in cotton, 20 x 90 cm

A cotton draught excluder with a rabbit motif, ninety centimetres long. The cover fits over the filling with a zip and so can come off for washing. Against the gap under a door, where in an older house warmth is often lost.

Dimensions and material

• 20 x 90 cm
• Cotton
• Zip, cover washable at 30 degrees

What it achieves

The gap under an interior door is usually a centimetre or two. Across a door width of eighty centimetres that is an opening of some 160 square centimetres through which cold air draws, and a draught at ankle height is exactly what makes a room feel cold while the thermostat says it is warm. A draught excluder closes that off without you having to change anything about the door.

Where it lies

Under an interior door, a cellar door or a door to an unheated hallway. Also on the windowsill of an old window. Ninety centimetres covers a standard interior door; with a wider door or a double door, measure beforehand.

The motif

Rabbits, a cheerful motif on a practical item that otherwise gets little attention. A draught excluder lies in view all season, so it may as well look cosy.

Care

The zip makes the cover washable at 30 degrees. Wash it separately the first time, as with any coloured cotton. Then let the cover air dry flat, so it keeps its size and slides easily back over the filling.

Twenty centimetres wide is on the generous side for a draught excluder, and that helps: a narrow roll tips over when the door opens and then ends up next to the gap instead of in front of it. A wider cushion stays where it lies.

Cotton breathes, which means no moisture stays trapped underneath on a cold tiled floor, as does happen with a synthetic draught strip.
